Reducing Wrinkles With
Botox Procedures

When it comes to common non-surgical cosmetic procedures, Botox injections may be the most well-known in existence. Not only are injections relatively low-cost, but they have a near-immediate effect on the lines and wrinkles that crease the face.

What is Botox?

Botox has skyrocketed in popularity among both female and male patients of every age all across the world. This is especially true in Salt Lake City, where plastic surgeons are asked to perform these injections daily.

This injectable protein is also known as botulinum toxin. It is FDA-approved and can help reduce the signs of aging. Repetitive muscle contraction can lead to wrinkling of the skin. Our skilled practitioners expertly inject Botox into targeted areas to prevent muscle contraction, thus reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

While Botox is a tool most often used to reverse the effects of aging caused by repetitive facial expressions, sun damage, or even smoking, it is a dynamic compound that can be used elsewhere to combat bodily imperfections such as excessive sweating and extreme muscle tension. New uses of Botox are being discovered and implemented in the world of aesthetics.

Eliminating Lines and Wrinkles

Looking for Botox in Salt Lake City? At Barr Aesthetics, Dr. Lucy Barr and her team can perform Botox treatment to help patients achieve a renewed sense of youthful beauty around the corners of their eyes and mouth, smoothing out lines such as in the forehead and the nasolabial folds.

In the cosmetic surgery industry, facial lines are separated into two categories, both of which can be treated with Botox:

Dynamic Wrinkles (also known as Mimic Lines) — these are wrinkles that come from repeated facial movements that result in set folds in the face.

Static Wrinkles (also known as Gravitational Folds) — these lines develop over time as age affects the elasticity of the face, causing gravity to pull the skin down.

Botox counters both dynamic and static wrinkles as the plastic surgeon targets specific areas for injection. These include:

  • Forehead and Brow Lifts: The horizontal pleats of the forehead caused when a person raises their eyebrows in surprise.
  • Glabellar and Frown Lines (the 11s): Glabellar lines form above the eyebrows while vertical lines appear between them.
  • Crow’s Feet: These lines creep out from the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Bunny Lines: Such wrinkles appear in the lines that form when a person scrunches up their nose as if they just smelled a strong smell, like onions.
  • Marionette and Purse String Wrinkles: These lines appear around the mouth and lip area, especially as creases in the nasolabial folds begin to deepen.
  • Lip Flip: Injecting Botox around the lips can give the patient a more plump pout by relaxing certain muscles.
  • Dimpled Chin: Botox can reduce the appearance of a dimpled chin, whether it’s a single dimple or an orange peel texture.
  • Masseters: If you suffer from tight jaw muscles, Botox can reduce tension between your jaws (masseters).
  • Migraines: Botox can relieve some of the tension that tends to cause migraines, making it an effective preventative treatment for headaches.
  • Tech Neck Lines: If you notice lines on your neck as a result of constantly looking at devices, Botox can smooth your skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Sweat Control: The FDA has approved the use of Botox to reduce excessive sweating in the underarms, hands, and feet.
  • Overactive Bladder Control: To reduce urgency incontinence, Botox can be injected into the bladder.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin injections, is a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment that reduces fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily freezing facial muscles. Botox is a quick and safe procedure that smoothes lines between your eyebrows, on your forehead, and around your eyes.

Botox is a natural, purified protein that works to prevent nerve impulses from reaching targeted muscles and inhibit muscle movement in the face. The muscles can then relax, resulting in a smooth appearance and helping to prevent the further definition of wrinkles and allowing your skin to smooth out.

Botox is not the same as a dermal filler. Botox freezes muscles, whereas fillers add volume under the skin using hyaluronic acid and other similar compounds or substances. Like Botox, fillers need to be readministered depending on how quickly a patient metabolizes them.

Botox is suitable for both men and women to use.

Botox is most often used in the forehead, in the brow area, and around the eyes.

Depending on what area you want to be treated with Botox, Dr. Barr will determine how many units you need. Botox is priced by units because everyone is unique and may need a different amount of Botox administered depending on the area, gender, size, and strength of the muscles.

Units vary in cost depending on where you go for your Botox and your needs can range anywhere from 2 units in some places on your face to up to 30 in others.

Your health care prior to Botox may need to vary slightly for the best results. In the week before your Botox injection, it’s recommended you avoid:

  • Blood thinners
  • Alcohol
  • Retinol

There is generally little to no downtime when it comes to Botox. After your session, you will most likely see some redness and swelling around the injection site. Though rare, some clients have a headache after injection.

After your botox has been administered, we recommend you avoid rubbing your face to prevent the botox from migrating to unwanted areas of your face.

You will start to see results in just 3-10 days. Using Botox consistently will help prevent permanent wrinkles from forming. Results from Botox can last for 3-6 months. With continued use, the muscles will weaken over time, allowing you to extend the time between treatment intervals.

If you choose to discontinue the use of Botox, the lines will gradually return over time and you will begin seeing fine lines again.

At Barr Aesthetics, we offer Lifestyle Lending for cosmetic surgical patients. We also accept Care Credit for injectable services. You can find out more about financing options at OnSpot Financing.

Inquire with your insurance provider if you’d like to find out if Botox is covered. In cases where Botox is therapeutic, it could be included in your insurance coverage.

The most common side effects of Botox injections are redness or swelling at the injection site; it may look similar to a bee sting until the swelling subsides in a few days. Other side effects could include:

  • Headache
  • Crooked smile
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Muscle weakness
  • Vision problems
  • Watery eyes
  • Rash

Use an SPF of at least 30 on your face every day. According to the American Cancer Society, SPF 30 can block up to 97% of UVB rays. SPF protection is even more important for sensitive skin.

While an allergic reaction to Botox is rare, symptoms would look like itchy rashes or hives, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling.
